Exhibition Introduction

This is the artist's first solo exhibition in Japan, showcasing works created during different periods and states since arriving in Japan. The theme of this exhibition is "Translucent Dreams."

Most of the works are made with mineral pigments, ink, and gold leaf. Each of these materials has its own personality: the translucent quality of mineral pigments, the free diffusion of ink, and the changing hues of gold leaf over time. The artist enjoys utilizing these characteristics to depict the hazy shadows of animals that exist only in their sights, sounds, and thoughts. When the brush lightly touches the paper, the intention is to capture their dreamlike translucence, creating an atmosphere that feels both real and illusory, both present and elusive.

For the artist, each piece is a space for storing dreams, with mineral pigments serving as the language of those dreams. Layers of paint build up, yet never fully obscure the colors beneath, much like dreams that are faintly visible yet unattainable. White pigments like crystal powder and talc possess a translucent quality; touching them feels like caressing fragments of dreams, delicate and poetic. It is hoped that viewers, while gazing at these works, can also experience a sense of familiar, translucent dreams.

The subjects of the artist's creations are often animals and plants, with the animals frequently depicted with closed eyes. Upon arriving in Japan, during the pandemic, everyone wore masks, creating a sense of detachment while walking the streets. At that time, the artist felt as if they too had become translucent, as though they might dissolve at any moment. A chance encounter with a dove resting in the sunlight, quiet and transparent, brought an unprecedented sense of tranquility and warmth.

The artist often feels that animals are an important link between humanity and nature. They possess a sensitivity and purity that humans cannot reach, and their connection to the earth seems deeper than ours. Yearning for a state of relaxation and quietness, the artist frequently fantasizes about transforming into an animal, simply existing in peace. Since then, they have been continually creating images of animals with closed eyes, in states of dreamy half-sleep.

This "closed-eye" state allows for better focus on the inner self. Easily distracted by external influences, excessive attention to the outside world can lead to a loss of self, resulting in restlessness and unease. The act of "closing one's eyes" resembles the beginning of a dream. In this tranquil personal world, it is hoped that everyone who steps into it can feel a sense of peace and joy.
